I should preface this with the fact that I am a professional freelance animator. I've worked on some stuff you've probably heard about, like Craig Before the Creek and Smiling Friends.
However, this site isn't about my professional endeavors, instead it is a deeply personal collection of interests. Animation, naturally, is one of them and deserves a spotlight on this site. I'd just like a place to showcase some of my personal animation projects.
Kablammo's AMA - Ask a Minion Anything
This is the second short focused on my character Kablammo. For this one I put out posts on social media where people could ask Kablammo questions directly, and she would answer them in the animation. I couldn't get to all of them, of course. I had ideas for some answers that I had to cut 'cuz I felt the animation or question was a bit to confusing or abstract in comparison to my other ideas.
This certainly was a fun one to do, I tried a lot of limited animation stuff and tried to make the entire animation look as if any given screenshot could be an illustration I made.
It is also the first short I made using Clip Studio Paint as my animation software. Previously I was using TVPaint, which is pretty abysmal when it comes to camera movements.
TNToy
This is the first Kablammo animation. She was still called "Harriet" in this one. I suppose it's a bit odd to go in reverse order with these, but I like having the most recent stuff at the top.
I created this animation before I was a professional. I was going through a drought of work and feeling pretty down about it. One thing I knew however, was that I needed more stuff for my portfolio.
One day, on a whim I had the idea to make an animated short for my friends birthday. My friend often talks about how their birthdays are some of the worst days of the year for 'em, so I wanted to rectify something there. The result is me working on an animated short in secret for 6 months. In the end it did brighten my friends day, which is all I ask for.
Poison Seller
This one was made as a college assignment! The final assignment of my 3rd year there was to make an animated advertisement. I loathe ads, of course, so I made an advertisement about something horrible. Jovially horrible, of course, an aesthetic choice I'm very fond of.
One of the tricks in this one is that I only used one background for the whole animation, as well as a very minimal color palette, so that I could focus on character animation above all. Since I didn't know or have access to any voice actors at the time, I voiced the witch myself.
I'm still pretty fond of this one, dated as it may be in comparison to what I can do today. It feels like an important milestone animation for me.
Voidworld Situation
This is one of my earliest animations, started before I was in animation college and before I really understood what I was doing. At the time, I made up a cast of characters and a world for a setting I called "Voidworld". Looking back on it, it was clear I had no idea how to set up a narrative or cohesive story back then and was just smashing a bunch of things I liked together without any rhyme or reason. But I sure was enthusiastic, constantly coming up with stuff, even if it wasn't particularly good. I suppose as you get older you make less stuff, but the stuff you make is a lot more intelligently crafted.
I really had no clue what I was doing back then, this was made in a pirated copy of Flash (before it was called "Animate") and I set the framerate to 20 fps completely arbitrarily. Still, at the end of the day I made a bunch of animation and it gave me a leg up once I started learning animation formally in college. Without this, it's likely I would never have become a professional in the long run.
And that's all the noteworthy animated shorts I've made. You can find some other stuff on my Youtube if you like. I'll also keep updating this page as I make more animations. I have some ideas.
